Nancy Wright, MPH, Director of the Cancer Prevention and Control Division at the Alabama Department of Public Health, presented "Protecting Your Family and Community from Breast and Cervical Cancer" on Thursday, July 23, 2026, in partnership with the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (HICA).
The program was delivered bilingually. Wright presented in English, and Daniel Novoa of HICA followed each section in Spanish, making the full hour and fifteen minutes accessible to Spanish-speaking families across the state.
That accessibility matters. Language remains one of the most persistent barriers to cancer screening in Alabama, and a recording families can watch at home, on their own schedule, in their own language, reaches people that a single in-person event never could.

Why It Matters
Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable through HPV vaccination, regular screening, and timely follow-up on abnormal results. Breast cancer outcomes improve dramatically with early detection. Both depend on people knowing what screenings they need, when they need them, and where to get them, knowledge that has to travel in the languages our communities actually speak.
